Answer Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’s Call to Join the National Day of Service on January 18, 2021 (That’s Today!)

Answer Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’s call to join the National Day of Service on January 18, 2021–that’s today!

As part of the festivities surrounding the Biden-Harris Inaugural, the two Democratic leaders have asked their constituents to participate in a National Day of Service in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., whose holiday falls on Monday.

Ok, we admit we’re late off the blocks in telling you about their request for you all to do something or host an event on the day-of.

But! The form also asks about your plans for 2021.

Specifically, it asks if you’ll commit to volunteering in your community for two hours a week, five hours a week, 10 or more hours a week, or taking a year off to serve.

January is an excellent time to plot your volunteering work for the year.

Past OTYCD stories offer several ideas for how you could spend your service hours.

Maybe you could give blood on a regular basis. You could volunteer at your local library once the pandemic subsides. If you don’t already subscribe to a local newspaper, get on that. Find ways to support black-owned businesses. Learn which organizations are handling the grab-and-go school lunch program where you are, and think about how you can assist.

These are just the things we’ve written about. You have dozens of options for making your community a better place. Do some research and see what you find.

Additional good news: Participating in the National Day of Service and planning your volunteer activities for the year fits right in with the Home State, Swing State, Red State strategy.

See the page on the Biden-Harris Inaugural website that talks about the National Day of Service, and scroll down for COVID-19 friendly suggestions for spending the day:

Fair warning: Filling out the form will probably land you on the mailing lists for Biden, Harris, and the Democratic Party.
