Enjoy the Inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris.
We do mean that. Enjoy the ceremony. Enjoy the festivities.
The last few weeks and months have been marred by Trump supporters who refuse to accept Biden’s victory.
That rejection of reality reached a terrible peak when thousands of Trump’s adherents attacked the Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.
We’re sick of these jerks stealing our joy. Sick. Of. It.
Shenanigans in GOP-controlled state legislatures barred election officials in some states from getting a jump on counting mail-in and absentee ballots, creating a “red mirage”–an appearance on the night of November 3, 2020 that Trump was winning, which melted away once the waiting, already-submitted ballots were counted.
If those states hadn’t passed those laws, Biden’s win would probably have been called sooner.
Instead, the major news networks waited until Saturday, November 7, 2020 to call the election for Biden.
Many of us took to the streets that day in spontaneous, peaceful dance parties that broke out across America.
COVID-19 had already put a damper on the Inaugural festivities before the January 6 Insurrection.
The events of that day prompted the call-up of more than 21,000 National Guard troops to protect Washington, D.C. before and during the Inaugural.
See a Military Times story about the call-up: https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2021/01/14/national-guard-dc-presence-will-swell-to-26000-for-biden-inauguration/
The January 6 Insurrection also forced Biden to back off his plan to take an Amtrak train to Washington, D.C. for his Inauguration.
See an Associated Press (AP) story about that change of plans:

We worked hard for this moment. The Jan 6 Insurrection stopped us from fully savoring the results of the Georgia Senate runoffs, which saw both Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff win the seats and give control of the Senate to Democrats.
Today, let’s have as much fun as possible. Let’s revel in our joy in our new president and our new vice president, who we all worked so hard to elect.
Celebrate. Dance. Drink rare and wonderful beverages. Feast on the finest meats and cheeses. Live it up!
Be COVID-19 safe when you whoop it up, but do please whoop it up. We’ve all earned it.
