Support The Trevor Project, Which Helps LBGTQ Youth

Support the Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LBGTQ youth.

The Trevor Project is a 19-year-old organization that sprung from the Academy Award-winning short film Trevor, about a gay teenager who struggles with his identity. It provides the only nationwide 24/7 crisis and suicide prevention hotline geared to LBGTQ youth.

Since the 2016 election, the Trevor Lifeline has had its hands full, and traffic spiked again after Trump’s tweet about banning transgender troops from the military. The Trevor Project is a worthy org that needs your support.

Tell Your World: Hate Has No Home Here

Tell the world you live in that you value all races, religions, and nationalities with a Hate Has No Home Here sign.

You’ve probably seen Hate Has No Home Here signs in your favorite shops or maybe even decorating your neighbors’ lawns. It springs from a Chicago-based project of the same name and it endeavors to combat hate speech and hateful behavior with public declarations that make clear that it won’t be tolerated.

If a yard sign isn’t your thing, you can opt for a window poster or a magnet.

Support Your Local Independent Bookstore and Avoid Amazon

Do you have a local independent bookstore? Spend money there, early and often. And stop buying your books, or anything really, at Amazon until it pulls its ads from Breitbart and stops carrying Trump products.

Reading is good. Fundamental, even. If you are lucky enough to have an independent bookstore near you–aka not Barnes & Noble–go spend some money there as soon as you can, and make a plan to swing by on a regular basis. Also, follow your local indie bookstore on social media, attend its events, and bring your friends, too.

Independent bookstores were vulnerable before Amazon arrived (Barnes & Noble did much to kill them) and not much has changed. Please step up and support your nearest one with your dollars.

Giving indie bookstores your business is a social good in and of itself, no matter who’s running the country, but it takes on greater importance under the Trump administration.

Both #GrabYourWallet and Sleeping Giants have been targeting Amazon for months, because it sells Trump family products and because it has not moved to pull its ads from Breitbart. It has been deaf to all entreaties, even as Sleeping Giants closes in the milestone of convincing 2,000 advertisers to leave the stomach-turning alt-right web site and despite countless calls, emails, and letters from supporters of #GrabYourWallet (As of early April, Amazon ranks as number 5 on the site’s Top 10 list of retailers to boycott.)

Important: You should know that Amazon is a somewhat controversial choice to boycott because its owner, Jeff Bezos, also owns the Washington Post, which has been one of the best, most relentless newspapers covering the Trump administration. Also, the Amazon Prime service makes it cheap and easy to read the Washington Post by offering free access online for six months and then at $4.99 thereafter. For some, Bezos’s support of the Washington Post nullifies any sins that Amazon is perpetrating.

Boycotting Amazon is far more difficult than other retailers because it offers so much more than books. Fortunately, the #GrabYourWallet community is way ahead on this, with a whitelist of alternatives to look to.

Speaking of which–if you don’t have a local independent bookstore and want to stop giving money to Amazon, try these shops instead:

Support the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)

Now more than ever, you need to support the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

When Trump was elected, and so many of us were flat on the mat or reeling in shock, the ACLU had its fists up and was ready to fight back.

On the morning of November 9, ACLU President Anthony Romero wrote a letter to Trump, putting him on notice that several of his campaign promises, if enacted, would violate the Constitution, and the 97-year-old nonprofit would dog him mercilessly over any such thing he tried.

It has gone after Trump with vigor and ferocity ever since.

The ACLU takes a lot of crap for sticking up for unpopular people who say unpopular things. If the ACLU hasn’t yet defended someone you find repugnant, give them time. They will.

That doesn’t change the fact that we need the ACLU now more than ever. Romero put his finger on its value in an article in Fast Company when he likened it to the U.S.’s insurance policy.

The organization got a powerful, historically unprecedented surge of support in the wake of the election. It received $15 million in online donations before Inauguration day, and during the first weekend of the Muslim travel ban in January 2017, it took in another $24 million–a sum equivalent to roughly six times what it reaps online in a year.

Trump is attacking bedrock American values on several fronts. The ACLU is, and will continue to be, on the front lines in the effort to push back.

We at OTYCD realize you’ve probably helped the ACLU in some way already. More than 350,000 contributors gave money during that January weekend. But we’re asking you to consider stepping up to the next level.

Given to the ACLU once? Consider becoming a monthly donor. Already a monthly donor? Consider increasing your donation, even if the increase is only small. Not a member yet? Join the 1.6 million who are. Already a member and donating monthly? Urge your friends to do more.

Can’t afford to do anything that costs money? Read up on the ACLU, follow it on social media, and defend it, firmly and unwaveringly, from those who fear and hate it.

Help Life After Hate Help People Who Leave the Violent Far-Right

Help Life After Hate help people who leave violent far-right extremist groups.

Founded in 2011, the Chicago nonprofit directly helps people who want to deradicalize and leave their old ways behind through its EXITUSA program.

It also runs the Against Violent Extremism (AVE) network, a squad of former violent extremists and survivors who combat the groups’ propaganda and help steer vulnerable youths away from them.

Note: Since we wrote the original text of this post, Samantha Bee devoted an August 2017 episode of her show to Life After Hate. It also launched a crowdfunding campaign to replace the $400,000 grant that Obama promised, but which Trump took away. Links to stories about the rescinded grant, the crowdfunding campaign, and the Samantha Bee episode have been included below.
