Support the Center for Reproductive Rights

Support the Center for Reproductive Rights, a global advocacy organization that defends and champions the idea that reproductive freedom is a basic human right.

Founded in 1992, the New York City-based non-profit doesn’t just defend access to abortion. It fights to improve access to birth control and prenatal care, it fights to decrease maternal mortality, and it fights efforts to take away public funds for reproductive health care. It champions the rights of those afflicted by HIV and AIDS.

The center fights the global gag ule, a favorite of Republican administrations, which restricts recipients of U.S. aid money from mentioning abortion to their patients. It combats female genital mutilation (FGM) as well as attempts to inflict incomplete, inaccurate, or just plain lousy sex education on young people. It wages these battles on six continents and at the United Nations. And its lawyers often fight for these all-important rights pro bono.

Basically, if it has to do with women and healthcare, the CPR is on it, and it’s probably on your side.

Support Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights (GRR!), a 501 (c)4 advocacy organization that defends reproductive rights.

 

Founded in Maine in 2013, GRR! is led by women who came of age in the mid-20th century–before birth control, and before Roe vs. Wade. They lived through the bad old days and they don’t want to see them come back.

Support the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), a 48-year-old organization that champions independent, sound science and translates it into political action.

Founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1969, the UCS promotes science-based actions and practical solutions to a range of problems that we face. Take the Vote for Science pledge.

 

The Vote for Science pledge is an offshoot of the March for Science movement, which held its second annual march on April 14, 2018.

 

The pledge calls for citizens to:

Hold their leaders accountable for supporting policies that use and empower science

Advocate for science in their own communities

Vote, and encourage friends and neighbors to vote, too.

Call Your MoCs to Protest HHS’s Proposed Plan to Stop Recognizing Transgender People as People

Call your members of Congress to protest Health and Human Services (HHS)’ proposed plans that would cease recognition of the civil rights of transgender people. 

 

Today’s Trump Administration fuckery comes from a Health and Human Services (HHS) proposal that would essentially cease to recognize the civil rights of transgender people.

 

The Obama administration had done much to issue guidelines and protections for this vulnerable group. On October 21, 2018, the New York Times reported that it had received an HHS memo that suggested narrowly defining gender as the sex assigned to an individual at birth.

 

If enacted, the changes would affect around 1.4 million Americans who have realized their sex and their gender don’t align.

We can argue why the Trump administration is doing this, and why they’re doing this now. But once again we find ourselves metaphorically coaxing a toddler to put down the matches and walk away from the gas stove. Stop the danger first, then ponder the whys.

 

Here’s a script to use with your members of Congress (MoCs). Before you call, check the social media feeds of your two Senators and your House Rep. Have they said anything at all? Follow the script as written. Have they spoken out in favor of transgender rights, as Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has? Thank them and mention the platform where you saw the message. Have they spoken against? Firmly, politely castigate them for their stance. Got it? OK, here’s a suggestion for what you can say:

 

“Dear Senator/House Rep (Lastname), I am (Firstname Lastname of town, zip code), and I am calling to ask you to do everything you can to stop Health and Human Services from rewriting the government’s definition of sex and gender to effectively erase transgender people. Recently, the New York Times received an HHS memo that promised to do just that by redefining the meaning of sex so narrowly that it fails to recognize the existence of transgender people.

If HHS succeeds, the department’s needless cruelty will affect the lives of around 1.4 million Americans who know that their gender doesn’t match the sex that they were assigned at birth. Transgender people suffer greatly as it is. The Obama administration took steps to grant them some civil rights protections. We shouldn’t be repealing those protections–we should be strengthening them and expanding them. I urge you to speak publicly against this proposal and draft laws that would reinforce the good work that the previous administration started.”

 

If you are a physician, please contact your relevant professional medical group, or the relevant subcommittee within that group, to urge it to push back against the government’s attempt to make laws that imperiously stomp all over science.

 

If you live in Massachusetts and you haven’t voted yet (early voting started Monday, October 22), please vote YES on Question 3. Voting yes is a vote to defend transgender rights in that state. If we at OTYCD hear about similar ballot measures in other states, we’ll add those here and we’ll note the correct wording to choose to affirm transgender rights.

Prepare to support The Last Weekend, a coordinated push to defend and save our democracy, taking place Saturday, November 3 through Tuesday, November 6.

 

Sounds a bit histrionic, we admit, but with the fallout from the July 16, 2018 Helsinki conference and the continued failure of the GOP-controlled Congress to do anything substantial about it, it’s clear that democracy in America is under threat.

 

You need to wipe your calendar in the days leading up to the midterms and devote yourself to The Last Weekend.

 

It’s an effort backed by every org you like — Swing Left, Flippable, Sister District, Moveon,  Indivisible, Resistbot, Wall-of-Us, you name it.

 

Its goal is to encourage everyone to talk to fellow potential voters. From the homepage:

Call Your Senators to Oppose SCOTUS Nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Oct 4 Update

Ok. Let’s recap what’s going on, since Twitter is chaotic ATM. 1. McConnell just filed cloture. Here’s what that means: [She retweeted Jake Tapper (@JakeTapper) saying:]

Mitch McConnell has filed cloture on the Brett Kavanaugh nomination to the Supreme Court — expect cloture vote Friday and final vote on confirmation Saturday

 

2. This is despite the fact no Senators have seen the FBI report – yet. They’re not seeing it until tomorrow morning. The report is being released to Senators/staffers ONLY. [She retweeted NPR (@NPR) saying:]

Only one copy of the report is being made available. Senators — and a limited number of aides with security clearances — will be allowed to read the report in a secure room at the Capitol.

 

3. The FBI investigation has been completed w/ over 40 people not being interviewed. We cannot forget this as we’re calling our Senators. [She retweeted NBCNews (@NBCNews) saying:]

4. So here’s what we should all do next: – Do not assume the FBI report will make a difference at this point. Even with the expanded scope, the entire thing thing has come off as a sham. E.g. Dr. Ford has not been interviewed. [She included a link to this CNBC story:]

a. For those of you with Dem Senators who have confirmed they will vote NO on Kavanaugh and will NOT flip (e.g. Harris; Casey) You CAN call and affirm their stances one final time. It doesn’t have to elaborate, but template script here if you need it.

 

Remember, the rule of thumb is to call when you have new information to add to previous calls. Your new info is McConnell teeing up the vote. However. IF you’ve called/emailed/faxed, your time is better spent rallying your personal networks to call. Everyone you know.

 

b. For those of you represented by red state Democrats (Tester/Manchin/Heitkamp) – Get Tester to affirm his no vote, like Donnelly did this morning. I doubt Tester will flip, but affirmation is critical right now. Don’t take chances.

 

For Manchin and Heitkamp: remind them there are many reasons to vote no to Kavanaugh, as listed by Tester and Donnelly in their statements. – For Manchin: he praised women in latest statement for coming forward. Remind him, supporting Kavanaugh => doing the opposite. Scripts.

c. For those represented by GOP senators who will vote to confirm, even if Kavanaugh stands in the middle of the street, screaming about beer: Call anyway. You’re in a unique position to give them complete hell. They have to know we’re watching and we WILL NOT FORGET. Script.

Other than Wed night vigils, what can you do? First: CALL YOUR SENATORS. Call volumes are going through the roof. But unlike w health care, the other side is mobilizing too. Which means your calls are even more vital. 202-224-3121. [He retweeted this message from Liz Ruskin (@lruskin)]  Sen. says the volume of calls from Alaskans on Kavanaugh is unprecedented. Deluge is larger than before the health care vote. “All the voicemail boxes are are literally filled within the first hour,” she says.

 

Call your senators to say no to Kavanaugh—but don’t just call the switchboard. And don’t give up if the line is busy or voicemail box is full. Senators have lots of offices. Find them all at . Senators employ staff assistants to answer the phone, check if callers are real constituents, then tally their positions. How many support Kavanaugh? How many oppose? Most offices circulate the call tallies to entire staff + senator every day. Your calls are counted. They count.

 

If you don’t like talking on the phone, or it’s tough for you to call, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a voice. One quick thing to do is DM or go to or text “resist” to 50409. It’ll help you write a message & send it as a fax or letter.

The atrium of the Hart Senate Office Building in DC has been renamed the People’s Atrium. It’s where folks are gathering. Bird-dogging trainings are happening daily at 8:30am, noon, and 4pm. On Tuesday, bird-doggers spoke to more than *60 senators.* Come help reach them all.

This THURSDAY [That’s today, people] in DC, folks gather at 12:30pm at Kavanaugh’s current courthouse, 333 Constitution Ave NW, and then at 12:30, is leading a march to the court he wants to join—followed by rally at SCOTUS. This will be big. will keep you posted; follow her.

 

Thursday is also a national youth and student day of action, with organizing led by and . Youth & students will march to Senate buildings to visit key offices. Follow them for more info. As says, the young people will win.

 

FRIDAY, as on Wed & Thu, there’ll be 8:30/12/4 bird-dogging trainings, 10am and 5:30pm DC office walk-ins—and probably a lot more, still in development. Ditto for Saturday. If the Senate votes, you know we’ll be protesting. So make a plan to get your butt to DC this weekend.

 

Is there anything else you can do to stop Kavanaugh? Yes. There is more you can do to stop Kavanaugh. Pull out your credit card. To fight a justice who supports unlimited money in politics, time to put some money into politics. It’s a stick, it’s a carrot, & it’s organizer fuel.

And while you’re committing to make a difference, take a sec to sign up to volunteer during the last weekend of this election at—where else?—, a joint effort by all your favorite orgs to turn out every blue vote we possibly can.

 

BTW, have I mentioned that Maine is important right now? It is SO important. Other important states: Alaska, West Virginia, Arizona, and let’s throw in Nevada because Dean Heller should be held accountable. Call your friends & relatives in these states, and ask them to speak up.

 

Here’s the underlying message of this giant thread. You have power. For the next four days, you have power. If all of us wield that power, we have a chance to win a fight with impossibly vast stakes. Don’t just scroll through Twitter. Show up. Fight back. The time, folks, is now.

 

So, you heard Celeste and Ben. The answer, as always, is to call, and urge friends and family to call.

 

If you have not called your Senators yet, now is the time. If you’ve called before, call again.

 

Only call your own Senators. Urge your friends and family members to call their Senators.

 

And yes, you have to pick up the phone and call, and I’m serious about only calling your own Senators.

 

Be polite. Always, be polite. Practice what you want to say before you say it. Get it right, master your emotions, then call.

Update from Sarah Jane, September 21, 2018: Dr. Ford continues to negotiate the terms of her appearance. The GOP continues to act bull-headed.

 

The answer, as it has been for weeks, is keep calling your Senators, and keep urging friends and family to call their Senators. This will be your weekend homework as well–leaving voicemail for your Senators about this issue.

 

Make it damn clear that you support Dr. Ford and her request for the FBI to examine her claim.

 

Here is a calling script Celeste Pewter (@Celeste_Pewter on Twitter) wrote Thursday to use with all Senators. If either or both of yours serve on the Judiciary Committee, scroll down a bit for a special script for them.

 

If any of your Senators are on the Judiciary Committee, it is extra-important that you call, and extra-important that any friends and family represented by them call.

 

Here is a calling script that Celeste Pewter wrote specifically for speaking to Senators who serve on the Judiciary Committee. Below that is a link to the full list of members followed by a written list of members with their party and state affiliations.

 

 

Here’s a link to the full membership of the Senate Judiciary Committee, but I will break out all the names and states further down to make it easier to figure out who represents you and people you know and love.

Patrick Leahy of Vermont (earlier in the process, the former Judiciary Committee chairman credibly accused Kavanaugh of perjuring himself under oath during previous judicial hearings for a lower-ranking post)

Christopher Coons of Delaware

Richard Blumenfeld of Connecticut

Also! Call your Senators regardless of whether they’re on the Judiciary Committee or not. If they’ve already committed to a ‘no,’ thank them. If they’re on the fence, tell them why you want them to vote ‘no.’ If they’re a ‘yes,’ do the same. Pressure them politely, but mercilessly.

 

And know this, too: we could all still fail to stop Kavanaugh. But that was true yesterday, and true last week. Keep fighting. Keep calling. Keep urging friends and family to call. Keep the pressure up.

Call your senators and demand that they vote NO on Brett Kavanaugh, Team Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court of the United States.

 

First, an apology from Sarah Jane: I meant to write and queue this earlier, closer to when the nominee was named. Life and work deadlines got in the way. I can only apologize and repeat the fact that OTYCD is a part-time endeavor. Thanks for your patience.

 

Anyway. We know who the nominee is now, and his judicial record is as noxious as you’d expect, given that he passed muster with The Federalist Society.

 

We need to push back.

 

The fight will be hard, but not impossible. And the fight will definitely be impossible if we don’t bother to fight at all.

 

Your Senators need to hear from you, and you need to be firm and clear. (And polite.)

 

So! Call your two Senators and tell them you want them to oppose Kavanaugh’s SCOTUS nomination. Then call friends and family across the country and ask them to do the same. And keep calling as new developments emerge about Kavanaugh and his views. (We at OTYCD expect to devote future posts to this issue.)

 

Remember: Loud, fierce, sustained protests against Trumpcare and Trumpcare 2.0 made them fail. It was the folks who called, texted, left voicemails, and showed up to protest who made the difference. If we can make loud, fierce, sustained protests against Kavanaugh, we could sink his nomination.

Call Your Senators and Demand That They Vote NO on Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s Nominee for SCOTUS, September 18, 2018 Edition

Update from Sarah Jane, September 18, 2018: Wow. So. Arizona Senator Jeff Flake was the first to say he felt uncomfortable having a vote on Kavanaugh in light of the allegation from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

 

This mattered because Flake is a Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He had the power to hold things up, and he did. Other Republican Senators voiced concerns after he did.

 

All of this prompted the powers that be to hold a hearing with Dr. Ford and Kavanaugh on Monday, September 24, 2018.

 

It’s good news that Dr. Ford will get a hearing. It’s good news that her choosing to step forward, at much personal sacrifice, prompted a delay in Senate Republicans’ crazed rush to ram Kavanaugh through in time to seat him for the SCOTUS session that starts in October.

 

The answer, as always: Call. Call your Senators every day until the point is moot.

 

If your senators have come out against Kavanaugh, thank them.

 

If they’re for him, berate them.

 

If they’re sitting on the fence, plead your case for a ‘no’ vote.

 

Urge your family and friends to call, especially if they live in red states, and especially if their Senators are on the Judiciary Committee.

And hey! It’s also extra-important for you and your friends and family to call if your Senators are Jeff Flake, Ben Sasse, or Bob Corker.

 

Yes, it’s important to target Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, and if you live in Alaska or Maine or know folks who do, carry on with that. But those two have been bearing the brunt of the pressure. Flake, Sasse, and Corker are Republican Senators who have announced that they won’t run again. They should feel extra pressure, too, because they can take risks their colleagues can’t.

 

We could all still fail to stop Kavanaugh. But that was true yesterday, and true last week. Keep fighting. Keep calling. Keep urging friends and family to call. Keep the pressure up.

His confirmation hearings ended yesterday (Friday Sept 7). I think it’s more important to beat the #StopKavanaugh drum until I can’t beat it any more.

It’s extra-important that you ask those in red states to call and oppose the SCOTUS nomination, and super-mega-extra-important for them (and you!) to call if their Senators are on the chamber’s judiciary committee.

 

Recruiting others to the cause is key. We need a ton of people calling their Senators 24/7, making it damn clear that Kavanaugh is a NO. Refer to @Celeste_Pewter’s calling script below and forward it with abandon.

This is another situation we have to treat like the fight to save Obamacare. We need to mobilize massive, massive, MASSIVE pressure. You need to call your Senators every day on this, and you need to recruit friends and family to call their Senators every day. For serious.

 

Our friend @Celeste_Pewter has been diligently beating the drum on the Kavanaugh issue, stressing the importance of fighting back and giving options for how to do it. All: Tomorrow [September 4] is going to be tense day for all of us. Remember: NONE of you are alone. If you need a pep talk or cat pictures, ping me. Also remember: we’re all frustrated and angry with how the hearings are proceeding, but let’s focus on what we CAN do at the moment.

 

Our part in this can be broken down into a few steps: 1. Calling any senators we have on judiciary, and demand they question vigorously. 2. Telling our Senators to vote no. 3. Pushing for state-level protections, a la MA’s Nasty Women Act. 4. Getting 5 others to do 1-3.

 

If you can do a little more and are in driving distance of D.C. – consider joining the protests. Let the Senate know we’re watching. Call your senators and demand that they vote NO on Brett Kavanaugh, Team Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court of the United States.

 

First, an apology from Sarah Jane: I meant to write and queue this earlier, closer to when the nominee was named. Life and work deadlines got in the way. I can only apologize and repeat the fact that OTYCD is a part-time endeavor. Thanks for your patience.

 

Anyway. We know who the nominee is now, and his judicial record is as noxious as you’d expect, given that he passed muster with The Federalist Society.

 

We need to push back.

 

The fight will be hard, but not impossible. And the fight will definitely be impossible if we don’t bother to fight at all.

 

Your Senators need to hear from you, and you need to be firm and clear. (And polite.)

 

So! Call your two Senators and tell them you want them to oppose Kavanaugh’s SCOTUS nomination. Then call friends and family across the country and ask them to do the same. And keep calling as new developments emerge about Kavanaugh and his views. (We at OTYCD expect to devote future posts to this issue.)

 

Remember: Loud, fierce, sustained protests against Trumpcare and Trumpcare 2.0 made them fail. It was the folks who called, texted, left voicemails, and showed up to protest who made the difference. If we can make loud, fierce, sustained protests against Kavanaugh, we could sink his nomination.

 

Check the link below to see if either of your Senators are on the chamber’s Judiciary Committee. If they are, it is extra-important that you call. Bonus points if you do this on behalf of friends and family and update them on their own Senators.

Before you call, you should check the social media feeds of your Senators and see if they’ve issued a statement on Kavanaugh.

 

If they’ve already agreed to vote no, thank them for that.

 

If they’ve already agreed to vote yes, urge them to change their vote.
