Thank the Charities That Cancelled Their 2017-2018 Fundraisers at Mar-a-Lago
This OTYCD entry originally posted in August 2017.
Thank the many charities that have cancelled the fundraisers and galas that they had planned at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Palm Beach, Florida, property.
Palm Beach’s season lasts from Thanksgiving to about, oh, Easter, and the cycle of gala fundraisers are the closest thing that it has to a local industry. Palm Beach is a tiny island with few venues that are both big and opulent enough to pass muster as sites for these fundraisers. (Decamping to West Palm Beach is simply Not Done.)
Mar-a-Lago was one of those favored big and opulent venues, until it wasn’t. A few charities had decided not to re-up their contracts with the club following Trump’s election. But in the wake of his Charlottesville comments, which offered aid and comfort to neo-Nazis, several organizations dropped Trump like the radioactive waste he is.
As of August 19, at least nine of the many charities and non-profits that booked big-deal luncheons, galas, and other fundraisers at Mar-a-Lago for the 2017-2018 season had cancelled.
You should consider thanking all of these charities and supporting them with your dollars. Pulling out of Mar-a-Lago will enrage Trump, will deny him the social status that comes with hosting these events, and will take millions out of Trump’s pockets.
It will also cause hardship for the charities, all of which will have a tough time finding other places to hold their events on Palm Beach. (It’s not unlike cancelling a huge, super-fancy wedding. Even six months out from the dates you’ve picked, every place you’d want to move to is going to be booked.) They, themselves, could take in less money from donations than they had expected and could suffer hits to their budgets because of their choice to break with Mar-a-Lago.
Read about the tally of cancelling charities (David Fahrenthold at the Washington Post has done a great job on tracking this story):
Send thank-you postcards to the following. Donation links are included for each charity or foundation that provided them on their webpages.
We will update this page accordingly if and when more charities cancel events at Mar-a-Lago.
Also, a note. Some of these charities hold non-progressive policies or have done dubious things in the past. We at OTYCD don’t require you to make a donation (and we’d never require donations, anytime, ever, just suggest them) but we are asking you to thank these entities for doing the right thing here.
