Read George Lakoff’s “A Modest Proposal: #ProtectTheTruth” and Act On It

This OTYCD entry originally posted in January 2018.

Read George Lakoff’s piece, A Modest Proposal: #ProtectTheTruth, and act on it on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, and any other time Trump attacks good journalism.

Lakoff is Director of the Center for the Neural Mind & Society at UC Berkeley and is the author of Don’t Think of an Elephant! Know Your Values and Frame the Debate, which you should read if you haven’t already.

He is convinced that Trump will attack the free press again on Wednesday, January 17, 2018. He doesn’t say why he believes Trump will lash out on that specific date, but the prediction seems to be a safe bet given how often Trump has attacked the free press to date.

Lakoff’s January 13, 2018 Medium piece equips you with tools to fight Trump and defend good journalism–the bedrock of a healthy democracy.

The link to Lakoff’s piece is below, but here are the key passages:

“Yet there’s a way to beat the troll strategy: ‘the key is to direct a ‘stream’ of pro-active, accurate messaging at the targeted audience.’

In other words, reframe to undermine the opposition’s frame, and repeat. #ProtectTheTruth

So when the president attacks the press on Wednesday, don’t take the bait. Instead, focus on truth and its moral context. Truth is under attack. Let’s protect it, and express our appreciation for those brave journalists whose job is to spotlight it.

Some ground rules:

  • Don’t use any of his terms, images, or hashtags.
  • Ignore his antics — if you retweet it you can’t defeat it, and when you embed it you spread it. Deny him the virality he craves. Ignore his antics.
  • Shift the frame to focus on powerful, truthful reporting.”

Help George Lakoff Fight A Lawsuit By Donating to This GoFundMe

Help George Lakoff fight a libel and slander lawsuit related to the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting by donating to a GoFundMe for his legal defense.

During a January 3, 2018 appearance on MSNBC, Lakoff said the following about Georgian-American businessman Ike Kaveladze (this quote comes from a Washington Post story linked below):

Right now, President Trump is in a noose. It’s the money laundering noose that’s tightening around his neck. It shows up not just in Bannon’s point about money laundering and also in the Fusion [GPS] point about money laundering in the New York Times op-ed today, but also in the fact that the main money launderer, Ike Kaveladze, was at the Trump Junior meeting in Trump Tower. He’s the eighth man there.

He is the major person who has been responsible for money laundering from Russia and other post-Soviet countries. And in addition, he set up over 2,000, you know, phony shell corporations with bank accounts and helped use that money in the bank accounts for the people doing the money laundering from Russia to get luxury apartments and luxury condos. The fact that he was invited by Trump Junior to that meeting indicates that Trump Junior knew him well.

Kaveladze has brought suit against Lakoff over this.

Lakoff is a good guy, a smart guy, and a hero in the eyes of us at OTYCD. Please consider donating to a GoFundMe for his legal defense.

As of February 11, 2018, it had raised more than $22,000 toward its goal of $150,000.

Read George Lakoff’s ‘Don’t Think of An Elephant! Know Your Values and Frame the Debate’ 10th Anniversary Edition

This OTYCD entry originally posted in June 2017.

Stop whatever it is you’re doing, get a copy of the 10th anniversary edition of Don’t Think of an Elephant! by George Lakoff, clear your schedule, and read it. If you already own it, reread it and refresh yourself on it. Do not stop rereading it until you are fully fluent in its concepts. If you are fluent in its concepts, buy and give the book to someone else who isn’t.

Lakoff is a cognitive scientist and linguist. He knows what the rest of us know all too well: left-leaning folks suck at messaging. Unlike the rest of us, he has solid ideas about how to fix it.

In one slim, elegant volume, Lakoff lays out what the right-leaning folks are doing successfully; why they are successful; and what we can learn from them.

Best of all, he shows how left-leaning values are American values and gives us all hope that we can reclaim the national debate by reframing the national debate. It’s doable. It won’t be easy, but it is doable.

While there’s too much to summarize, a big thing to remember is to flatly refuse to embrace and repeat language popularized by right-wingers. Using their language validates the screwy ideas they embody. We need to devise and repeat our own language,  and it can’t just be a mess of talking points–it has to spring from an authentic, cohesive worldview. Conveniently, Lakoff shows how the left does in fact have one, and he talks about how to articulate and defend it.

This is a direct order: Read Don’t Think of an Elephant! and make it the engine that drives your activism.
