Support Democrat Zach Wahls’s Campaign to Become an Iowa State Senator (Good Update March 24, 2019)

Update March 24, 2019: YES YES YES! Zach Wahls won his race for Iowa’s Senate, representing District 37.

He drew 78 percent of the vote, beating his Libertarian opponent by almost four to one. Wahls’s term continues to 2023.

Support Zach Wahls, a Democrat who’s running for a seat in Iowa’s state senate.

Wahls, the son of lesbian parents, gained national prominence in 2011 when he defended gay marriage in a speech before the Judiciary Committee of the Iowa House of Representatives. Footage of his speech became the most-watched political video on YouTube that year.

He co-founded Scouts for Equality, a non-profit that successfully urged the Boy Scouts of America to reconsider its policies on gay scouts and volunteers. (Wahls is an Eagle Scout.)

Now 26, he’s running for to represent Iowa’s 37th in its state senate.

He won his early June primary and will face a Libertarian incumbent on November 6, 2018. If he wins, he’d be Iowa’s youngest state senator.

Wahls hopes to improve mental health services in his state and hopes to restore full funding to Planned Parenthood. He opposes the Trump-GOP attempts to destroy the Affordable Care Act in part because it would devastate rural hospitals. He’s a Moms Demand Action Gun Sense candidate.

He supports collective bargaining rights and a higher minimum wage. He decries the actions of Immigration, Customs, and Enforcement (ICE) and opposes its attempts to deputize Iowa police. He favors affordable college tuition and universal pre-K. He would boost efforts to improve Iowa’s water quality and maintain its role as a wind energy producer.

Call Your MoCs to Protest HHS’s Proposed Plan to Stop Recognizing Transgender People as People

Call your members of Congress to protest Health and Human Services (HHS)’ proposed plans that would cease recognition of the civil rights of transgender people.

Today’s Trump Administration fuckery comes from a Health and Human Services (HHS) proposal that would essentially cease to recognize the civil rights of transgender people.

The Obama administration had done much to issue guidelines and protections for this vulnerable group. On October 21, 2018, the New York Times reported that it had received an HHS memo that suggested narrowly defining gender as the sex assigned to an individual at birth.

If enacted, the changes would affect around 1.4 million Americans who have realized their sex and their gender don’t align.

Full article is here:

We can argue why the Trump administration is doing this, and why they’re doing this now. But once again we find ourselves metaphorically coaxing a toddler to put down the matches and walk away from the gas stove. Stop the danger first, then ponder the whys.

Here’s a script to use with your members of Congress (MoCs). Before you call, check the social media feeds of your two Senators and your House Rep. Have they said anything at all? Follow the script as written. Have they spoken out in favor of transgender rights, as Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has? Thank them and mention the platform where you saw the message. Have they spoken against? Firmly, politely castigate them for their stance. Got it? OK, here’s a suggestion for what you can say:

“Dear Senator/House Rep (Lastname), I am (Firstname Lastname of town, zip code), and I am calling to ask you to do everything you can to stop Health and Human Services from rewriting the government’s definition of sex and gender to effectively erase transgender people. Recently, the New York Times received an HHS memo that promised to do just that by redefining the meaning of sex so narrowly that it fails to recognize the existence of transgender people.

If HHS succeeds, the department’s needless cruelty will affect the lives of around 1.4 million Americans who know that their gender doesn’t match the sex that they were assigned at birth. Transgender people suffer greatly as it is. The Obama administration took steps to grant them some civil rights protections. We shouldn’t be repealing those protections–we should be strengthening them and expanding them. I urge you to speak publicly against this proposal and draft laws that would reinforce the good work that the previous administration started.”

If you are a physician, please contact your relevant professional medical group, or the relevant subcommittee within that group, to urge it to push back against the government’s attempt to make laws that imperiously stomp all over science.

If you live in Massachusetts and you haven’t voted yet (early voting started Monday, October 22), please vote YES on Question 3. Voting yes is a vote to defend transgender rights in that state. If we at OTYCD hear about similar ballot measures in other states, we’ll add those here and we’ll note the correct wording to choose to affirm transgender rights.

Help All Out Help Gay Men in Chechnya Escape to Safety

This OTYCD entry originally posted in May 2017.

Help All Out, an organization devoted to LGBTQ rights, help gay men escape torture and persecution in Chechnya.

Chechnya is a region of Eastern Europe that is heavily Muslim. On April 1, 2017, the Russian paper Novaya Gazeta broke the news that Chechen authorities had rounded up more than 100 gay men, detaining them in camps, and torturing them. As many as three might have died.

When asked about the actions, a spokesperson for Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov reportedly said, “You cannot arrest or repress people who just don’t exist in the republic… If such people existed in Chechnya, law enforcement would not have to worry about them, as their own relatives would have sent them to where they could never return.”

The All Out Action Fund is a 501(c)(4) organization that is partnering with the Russian LGBT Network to evacuate gay men from Chechnya. They have met their initial fundraising goal but it wouldn’t hurt to add your donation.

Join the Equality March for Unity and Pride on June 11

Show your support for the LBGTQ community by joining or assisting the Equality March for Unity and Pride on June 11.

Originally intended as a Washington, D.C.-only event, it has morphed into a global movement. As of early April, the march had spawned satellite events in Austin, Texas; Portland, Maine; Seattle, Washington; and Sydney, Australia. More are sure to be announced.

The LBGTQ community has been feeling the chill since Trump took office. If he is impeached and replaced by Mike Pence, things won’t improve. If you can’t join a march, consider sponsoring someone to go; wearing rainbow flag symbols and pro-LBGTQ t-shirts; telling people about the march; and helping it trend on social media.
