Learn About Abortion Laws In Your State, Your Country, and The World, Thanks to the Center for Reproductive Rights

Learn about abortion laws in your state, your country, and the world at large, thanks to the Center for Reproductive Rights.

We at OTYCD don’t need to tell you that access to abortion is under attack across America. It’s still legal, but anti-abortion lawmakers are, and have been, doing their level best to make it as inconvenient and expensive as possible, both for health care providers and for their patients.

The Center for Reproductive Rights, a 26-year-old global advocacy nonprofit based in New York City, has compiled a State of the States 2017 report that surveys abortion laws across the country.

Download the report through the link below, and also see which states attempted to pass bans on abortions at and after 20 weeks’ gestation, and which states tried to ban the dilation and evacuation (D&E) surgical procedure:

The CPR also produces and updates a map of abortion laws across the world. See the 2018 world map here (it relies on Adobe Flash):

Help Expose Fake Abortion Clinics

This OTYCD post originally appeared in December 2018.

Help expose fake abortion clinics–facilities set up by pro-life groups that mimic abortion clinics, but attempt to pressure women out of seeking the help they need.

You’re going to want to sit down for this one. Fake abortion clinics have been a thing since the 1960s. Today, there are more than 4,000 of them across America while there are fewer than 800 legitimate clinics.

They are designed to look like medical facilities in every respect, but because they are not actual clinics, they don’t have to abide by HIPAA privacy laws. That’s right–they don’t have to safeguard any medical information that they might receive.

These facilities can exist and carry on with their borked mission because what they do is regarded as religious outreach, which is in turn protected by the First Amendment.

Activists are trying to hold fake clinics accountable by pursuing them on truth in advertising laws–making them more clearly admit that they are not abortion clinics and do not provide abortions or referrals to abortion clinics.

One of the ways they’re doing this is through the #ExposeFakeClinics website, which is a resource hub for those trying to spread the word about fake clinics.

Exposing fake clinics takes several forms. They include:

Liking online reviews of legitimate clinics

Reviewing fake clinics

Reporting fake clinics that engage in false advertising

Protesting outside of fake clinics (but scroll down for important information about this)

Support the Center for Reproductive Rights

Support the Center for Reproductive Rights, a global advocacy organization that defends and champions the idea that reproductive freedom is a basic human right.

Founded in 1992, the New York City-based non-profit doesn’t just defend access to abortion. It fights to improve access to birth control and prenatal care, it fights to decrease maternal mortality, and it fights efforts to take away public funds for reproductive health care. It champions the rights of those afflicted by HIV and AIDS.

The center fights the global gag ule, a favorite of Republican administrations, which restricts recipients of U.S. aid money from mentioning abortion to their patients. It combats female genital mutilation (FGM) as well as attempts to inflict incomplete, inaccurate, or just plain lousy sex education on young people. It wages these battles on six continents and at the United Nations. And its lawyers often fight for these all-important rights pro bono.

Basically, if it has to do with women and healthcare, the CPR is on it, and it’s probably on your side.

Support Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights (GRR!), a 501 (c)4 advocacy organization that defends reproductive rights.

Founded in Maine in 2013, GRR! is led by women who came of age in the mid-20th century–before birth control, and before Roe vs. Wade. They lived through the bad old days and they don’t want to see them come back.

It fights to ensure that younger generations of women keep and expand the reproductive rights they fought for.

Support Americans Who Need Late-term Abortions

Support Americans who need late-term abortions.

No one gets an abortion after 20 weeks on a lark. You get an abortion after 20 weeks if you were raped and couldn’t get help earlier, or the baby is dead, or will die soon, or the pregnancy will kill you or end your fertility if you try to carry to term.

Obtaining an abortion after 20 weeks is an exceptionally expensive ordeal. Only a handful of doctors in the United States accept patients who need late-term abortions.

Only a handful of doctors do this work because of constant harassment from both pro-lifers and legislatures, which takes a toll on even the most thick-skinned and stiff-spined. Also, pretty much every other form of medicine is easier and better-paid than specializing in late-term abortions.

Read the June 2016 Jezebel story Interview With a Woman Who Recently Had an Abortion at 32 Weeks, by Jia Tolentino. Warning: It’s graphic, emotionally wrenching, and utterly unforgettable. You’ll need time to decompress afterward. There’s also no reason to think anything has changed for people in this situation since the story was published.

Once you’ve done that, consider donating to the George Tiller Memorial Abortion Fund, which helps people who need late-term abortions but don’t have the money to cover the procedure and associated costs.

Defend Yourself and Your Friends Against a Post-Roe World: Stock Up on Plan B and Other Forms of Emergency Contraception

Defend yourself against a post-Roe world by stocking up on Plan B, the emergency contraception medicine you can take in the hours and days after sex to prevent pregnancy.

With the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), countless Americans fear that the Roe vs. Wade ruling will be overturned, reverting legislation on abortion to the individual states instead of allowing it on the federal level.

Those who express fear over this possibility are correct. It is, indeed, time to panic and take defensive stances. The far right has been hell-bent on overturning Roe since the SCOTUS decided it in 1973. Evangelicals and other far-right extremists don’t want women to control their own bodies. It’s not about preserving life. It never was. It’s about making women slaves to their fertility. Period. Full stop.

We’ve reached the point in this shitshow where it makes sense to buy and bank doses of Plan B, the emergency contraception medication that can prevent pregnancy in the hours and days after an act of penis-in-vagina (PIV) sex. Plan B is the best-known, but those who are over a certain weight should use ella instead. Plan B works less well with folks who weigh 180 pounds or more.

Emergency contraception can be effective as late as five days after sex, but it’s best to take it as soon as you suspect you might be pregnant. Emergency contraception is NOT, repeat, NOT an abortificient, aka a drug that causes an abortion. It prevents a fertilized egg from implanting in the lining of the wall of the uterus. If the egg does not implant, it cannot lead to pregnancy.

And hurrah hurrah, you can purchase it over the counter (OTC). It costs $40 to $60, generally. If you’re wealthier than most, it’s even more important that you consider building an emergency contraception stash to help friends and family who are less well-off. Being forced to find an extra $40 to $60 is a legitimate hardship for many. If you can step up, please do so.

The options below allow you to place your order online, which lets you avoid judgmental and nosy pharmacists who might refuse to fill the script over a “religious objection”.

If you yourself are past the point of needing to worry about an unwanted pregnancy, it still makes sense to bank doses to help daughters, nieces, cousins, and their friends who might find themselves suddenly flung into hell in a state with anti-abortion trigger laws.

As noted below, Plan B has a shelf life of four years, and the expiration date is printed on the box. Afterpill, another variant, is good for 18 months. There doesn’t appear to be information on ella but the expiration date should be printed on the box.

Emily L Hauser (@emilylhauser) had a good, short Twitter thread on this on June 27, 2018 (Note that the coupon linked in the second tweet might be expired by the time this post goes live):

Between the election & the inauguration, I bought two rounds of Plan B (the morning after pill) to have on hand should my children or their friends need it in the anti-choice hellscape that I imagined would come into being. We’re a step closer to that hellscape now. 1/2

I just called Plan B customer service to confirm the following: Plan B (& other levonorgestrel meds) has a 4-yr shelf life; the exp. date is printed clearly on the box. Here’s a coupon: Here’s info from Planned Parenthood 2/2

I’m being reminded that Plan B isn’t nearly as effective over a certain weight. The

alternative is known as ella. Here’s information on the ella morning after pill

Here’s a way to order online [She included this link]:

https://www.prjktruby.com/about/products/ella/

[Here also is an info link about Ella]

https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/morning-after-pill-emergency-contraception/whats-ella-morning-after-pill

PS It’s worth remembering that online information can lose its funding & go missing, be changed, etc & so on. Books are harder to get rid of. This is a terrific resource on human sexuality, geared toward teens/young adults & good for anyone with questions

[She included this link] https://www.dacapopress.com/titles/heather-corinna/s-e-x-second-edition/9780738218854/

PPS A lot of people are talking about how useful this information will be for their daughters – SONS (/people with any reproductive organs) NEED THIS INFORMATION, TOO. Please and thank you.

Another followup for the record: Plan B, ella, & all of their various forms do NOT terminate pregnancies – they prevent pregnancy from occurring in the first place. Here’s information on that: Also for the record, abortion is healthcare & yes I’ve had one.

Later, in the comments, she included a link for purchasing Afterpill, another brand of emergency contraception:

https://afterpill.com

Further along in the comments, another poster included an Amazon link to a generic emergency contraception medication:

Subvert the Global Gag Rule on Abortion by Donating to She Decides

This OTYCD entry originally posted in March 2017.

Subvert the Republican global gag rule on abortion by donating to She Decides, an initiative that helps women around the world exercise their reproductive rights.

The Dutch government launched She Decides earlier this year after Trump reinstated the Mexico City Policy, which is better known as the “global gag rule.” First put forward in 1984 under President Ronald Reagan, it requires foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to refrain from “perform(ing) or promote(ing) abortion as a family planning method” if they want to receive U.S. funding for family planning programs. “Promoting” is construed to mean the mere discussion of abortion, hence the nickname “global gag rule”–if you want U.S. funds, you can’t even mention the existence of abortion to the people you help.

Since 1984, the global gag rule has come and gone, vanishing when Democratic presidents take office and returning from the dead when Republicans are elected. Trump took an evil, deadly, wrongheaded policy and made it that much more evil, deadly, and wrongheaded by expanding the types of funding that are linked to the global gag rule. Now anti-AIDS and HIV efforts, programs that assist mothers and babies, and other health-related assistance efforts are held hostage as well.

She Decides allows Americans (and indeed, anyone in the world) who wants to push back against the unconscionable effects of the global gag rule by supporting vital programs in developing countries. It channels funds to NGOs that suffer under the Mexico City policy–those that honor and act on straightforward factual information about sexual and reproductive health, and help women exercise the right to choose whether and when to have children, and choose how many they will have.
